In July 2023, we conducted fieldwork with our research partner Leeds GATE, working with members of the community to understand the impact of the Police Act 2022 and preceding trespass laws on their lives.

The week we ended our visit, Friends Families Travellers put out a public call for evidence for use in a judicial review of the Police, Crimes, Sentencing, and Courts Act 2022.

We knew this was an important opportunity our research could speak to, so we quickly analysed the interviews and mental sketch maps we’d collected from participants and put together the following summary of evidence to submit:

We were grateful to be able to respond to this call with the dozens of interviews that we had just conducted with Gypsies and Travellers in Leeds on how the Police Act has further narrowed nomadic ways of life. In academic research, it’s rare to have the chance at such an immediate impact with such specific relevance — the main form of contribution we have capacity to make are journal articles, which have a long review and publishing cycle before they can be cited in court.
